Build Your Own Worlds: Worldbuilding, the Codex and Usage Limits

Narratica 0.9.0 lets you create your own worlds, characters, places and scenarios, adds the Codex to every story, and introduces usage limits.

Caroline

Until now you could only play the worlds we made. Since update 0.9.0 you can make your own. The same update added the Codex to every story and introduced usage limits.

Worldbuilding

Tap Create and choose what you want to create: a world, a character, a place or a scenario.

Everything starts with a world. You name it, choose a setting and spell out the rules, tone and lore that guide every story set there. Characters, places and scenarios always belong to a world, so you pick the world first and build inside it.

Each wizard asks one thing per screen and saves as you go. Only the first step is required. For everything after it you can tap Fill in later and come back whenever you want.

A world becomes playable once it has a scenario that is ready. The edit screen of a world or a scenario has a Path to playable checklist that shows what is still missing. When your first scenario is ready, you can start the story yourself straight away.

The docs go through it step by step: building a world, characters and places and writing scenarios.

Everything you create is private for now, and you can't share your worlds with other players yet. We are working on social features that will make that possible, and they are coming soon. Until then, you can show off what you built on our Discord.

The Codex

Long stories get crowded. Who was that blacksmith again? What was the name of the tavern?

Tap the book icon in the top bar of any story to open the Codex. The Summary tab shows the scenario, the world and the character you play as. The other two tabs list the characters and the places in the story.

The Codex shows the story as it was when you started it, so editing the world later does not change your running stories. More about stories and the Codex is in the docs.

Usage limits

Every reply in Narratica is written by an AI model, and every reply costs us money. We are a small team and we want to keep Narratica free to play, so we introduced usage limits.

There is a session limit, which resets 5 hours after your first message in that session, and a weekly limit, which resets 7 days after your first message that week.

The ring in the story's top bar and the Usage card in Settings show how much you have used. When you reach a limit, the app tells you how long until you can continue. The FAQ has more about limits.

The limits only apply to the AI. Creating worlds, characters, places and scenarios is not limited, and neither is rewinding or deleting messages.

We are also working on Pro, which will come with higher limits. We will share more when it is ready.

What's next

We are working on personas: a character of your own that you make once and can play as in any world. We are also building a new AI engine, so stories remember more, keep track of plot threads and keep the characters and places that appear along the way.

Try worldbuilding in the latest version on the App Store and Google Play.
