What is Narratica
What the app is, how a world becomes a story, and where to go from here.
Narratica is an app for iPhone and iPad and Android, out now in an early version. It is a text role-playing game, which means that you write what your character does and the story writes back.
About these docs
These pages explain how Narratica works and how to build your own worlds, so if you get stuck in the app, come back here.
The game
You go into a world and play in it. For now the worlds are the ones our team made. Soon you will also play in worlds you build yourself, and later in ones other players made Coming soon. You play as a character who already lives in that world (a protagonist), and later also as a persona of your own Coming soon.
You enter a world through a scenario. Because scenarios share the same characters, places and world definition, one world can hold many different stories: in the same world you can play a king, a knight, a blacksmith or a beggar.
Not in the app yet
Two things above are not in the app you can download today. There is no persona of your own yet, so you play as one of the protagonists the scenario's author chose, and there are no worlds from other players, so you play your own worlds and the ones our team made. Home
Home greets you by name, with a banner that asks Are you ready for new adventure? and a Go to discover button. Once you have started a story, Continue Playing lists your stories, each with its cover, its title, the last message and who said it, and when, and its View All takes you to Stories. Below that, Scenarios shows a row of scenarios you can play, and its View All opens Discover. The two icons at the top open Discord and your notifications.

The violet + in the middle asks you to Choose what you want to create: a World, a Character, a Place or a Scenario. Discover says Find your next adventure and has two tabs, Worlds and Scenarios. Every card shows its cover, the author, the name and one line, and a world's card carries its setting as a pink chip. For now the cards here are the worlds our team made, and the heart on them shows 0 until the social features are in the app.

Profile
Profile shows your nickname, your @handle, when you joined, and an Early Access tag, and under them four tabs (Worlds, Scenarios, Characters, Places) with everything you have built. A card with an Incomplete chip still has fields to fill, so tap it to finish. An Unplayable chip means nobody can start a story from it yet: a world that has no playable scenario, or a scenario that still needs something. The gear at the top opens Settings, where Log out and Delete account live, and the app version is at the bottom.
How a world works
A world is a frame that holds all of its characters and places, and when you build one you also pick its setting, describe it for players and write its definition for the AI.
Then you write scenarios in it. A scenario is where a story starts and what a player presses Play on, so a world without one cannot be played.
The words you will see
A world holds everything. Characters and places live in it. A scenario turns them into something playable. A protagonist or your persona is who you are, and the story is what comes out.
